چکیده

Neuropsychological dissociations between regular and irregular past tense verb processing have been explained in two ways: (a) separate mechanisms of a rule-governed process for regular verbs and a lexical-associative process for irregular verbs; (b) a single system drawing on phonological and semantic knowledge. The latter account invokes phonological impairment as the basis of poorer performance for regular than irregular past tense forms, due to greater phonological complexity of the regular past. In 10 nonfluent aphasic patients, the apparent disadvantage for the production of regular past tense forms disappeared when phonological complexity was controlled. In a same-different judgment task on spoken words, all patients were impaired at judging regular stem and past-tense verbs like man/ manned to be different, but equally poor at phonologically matched non-morphological discriminations like men/mend. These results indicate a central phonological deficit that is not limited to speech output nor to morphological processing; under such a deficit, distinctions lacking phonological salience, as typified by regular past tense English verbs, become especially vulnerable. 2002 Elsevier Science (USA). The morpho-phonological interface in Specific Language Impairment

This thesis investigates the nature of the interface between two components of language morphology and phonology in children with Grammatical-Specific Language Impairment (G-SLi), compared to those with typically-developing language. I focus principally on the impact of phonological complexity on past tense inflection, but I also investigate other areas of morphology. More specifically, I show ...

Missing Players: Phonology and the Past-tense Debate

The proposition that the mental lexicon is a ‘dual route’ system, advanced by Pinker and others to account for regular and irregular morphology, overlooks the important fact that morphological regularity correlates inversely with phonological regularity --‘regular’ past-tense beeped being phonologically irregular (exceptional syllable), while ‘irregular’ past-tense kept is phonologically just r...

The past-tense debate: exocentric form versus the evidence.

extends to other phenomena, including some types of developmental dyslexia [5] and developmental language impairments. In two articles [6,7] we suggest how a phonological deficit could give rise to deficits in both inflectional morphology and aspects of grammar seen in cases of specific language impairment (SLI). Pinker and Ullman dismiss this account of SLI, citing studies that failed to find ...

Irregular past tense forms in English : how data from children with specific language impairment contribute to models of morphology

Two cognitive models of inflectional morphology are widely debated in the literature—the Words and Rules model, whereby irregular forms are stored in the lexicon but regular forms are created by rule, and Single Mechanism models, whereby both regulars and irregulars form an associative network, with no rules. A newer model, the Computational Grammatical Complexity (CGC) model, recognises the co...
